The Foggy Bottom West End Village has arranged for a private tour of a fascinating exhibition on housing at the National Building Museum.

We’ve all heard and used the term “aging in place.” But what exactly does it mean? What makes a place suitable to grow old in? Unfortunately, America’s current housing stock doesn’t work for our aging population. As demographics continue to shift, older adults will need new kinds of housing that can support them even as their physical or cognitive abilities decline.

Making Room: Housing for a Changing America hopes to answer these questions. Making Room digs into the latest advances in home design and showcases how architects, policymakers, developers, planners and the general public can use design to create spaces that adapt as their owners age.

The centerpiece of the exhibition is the “Open House,” installed right in the exhibition gallery. It is an interactive, 1,000-square-foot hyper-efficient flexible dwelling with movable walls and multifunctional furniture allowing the space to meet the needs of a variety of today’s growing but underserved households. You can walk through the stylish, convertible dwelling and see how it can be adapted to suit a “new” living arrangement of a grandmother, her adult daughter, and grandson.

Join us for this fascinating exhibition. Who knows - you may come away re-thinking your own living space!

Note that there are numerous restaurants in the area so you may want to plan to have lunch in the neighborhood following the tour.

Cost: $5.00 per participant. (The Village is underwriting the cost of the docent.) Please note that the $5.00 fee is not refundable if you cancel at any time. When you register you will find instructions on how to make your payment.

Accessibility: The National Building museum is completely accessible. Wheelchair access is located at the G Street NW entrance. If you are in need of a wheelchair upon arrival visit the Information Desk to inquire. Elevators are centrally located on the north and south walls of the building and will take you to the exhibition space. The Museum’s exhibition galleries and other public spaces are designed in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Members only.

Registration required.
