Destined for War
Stuart Leavenworth, a veteran reporter who was the China Foreign Correspondent for McClatchy newspapers until returning to the Washington bureau last year, will offer his perspective on U.S. China relations, economic competition and the friction between East and West as China emerges as a Superpower.

The evening is a special edition of the Village Book Club, but you don't have to read a book to attend and learn more about this fascinating topic.

The discussion will bounce off of a provocative new book called “Destined for War: America, China, and Thucydides's Trap” by Graham Allison, Director of Harvard Kennedy School’s Center for Science and International Affairs. Allison explains why Thucydides’s Trap is the best lens for understanding U.S.-China relations in the 21st Century. The book asks why, when a new superpower threatens to displace a ruling power, a deadly pattern results that often (but not always) results in war. The book also reveals how clashing powers have kept the peace in the past — and what painful steps the United States and China must take to avoid disaster today.

Villager Anders Gyllenhaal will moderate a discussion between Leavenworth and Villagers about this topic. (The author of the book will not be present.) Come with your questions and expect a lively exchange.

Cost: Free. For members who would like to read the book, it is available from the library and is also out in paperback and audio format. (But again, reading the book is not required.)

Open to members only. Registration is required.
