Anders Gyllenhaal, editor of three major U.S. newsrooms and a former chair of the Pulitzer Board, will explore “Six Big Questions” that will shape the future of the First Amendment.

The powerful American ideals of freedom of speech, religion and press, built into our laws and culture over the past two centuries, are facing their most significant challenges as society goes digital. Driven by technology, our divided politics and the globalization that puts cultures into direct conflict, the freedoms that help define our nation are being tested in the courts, on the campaign trail, on college campuses and in everyday life.

The “Six Big Questions” that Gyllenhaal presents will call for discussion every step of the way, so bring your thoughts and opinions on this fascinating and important topic.  Gyllenhaal researches and writes extensively on First Amendment issues for newspapers around the country and will teach a course on this topic at The George Washington University in Spring 2018.

Accessibility: The Columbia Residences is accessible via an outdoor lift elevator to the left of the steps leading to the front entrance, and then via an elevator within the building to the second floor.

Open to members only.
