Our June 11, FBWE Village excursion to Dumbarton Oaks followed by lunch at nearby Cafe Divan was a delight for the senses! The beauty of the gardens, the scent of the roses, the feel of the grass, the sound of a water sculpture, along with views of pre-Columbian and Byzantine art and the tastes of Turkey gave us all such pleasure.
Two docents guided us in small groups through the varied gardens designed by Edith Wharton’s niece that were both personal and intimate despite covering multiple acres. We also toured Phillip Johnson’s stunning light-filled museum housing a fascinating collection of pre-Columbian art. Some of us were first-timers to the gardens, and others unfamiliar with the charming restaurant; and, to all, an outing worth repeating in other seasons.
