The Village added 25 new members in 2017. We’re off to a good start this year with two new members in January, bringing our total to 147 members.

I expect the Village can add another 25 members in 2018. we have a terrific Membership Committee with Anna Chisman, Christina Farnsworth, Sasha Mabry, Linda Mazzochi and Leah Schroeder. Villager Laurie Landy assists with referrals from Watergate West. Trevor Neve continues to reach out to our male prospects.

Have You Thought About Volunteering?

I grew up in a small town in southern Virginia. It was the kind of place where everyone looked after each other. My father was a doctor who, after a full day at the office, spent many evenings making house calls to sharecroppers out in the county. They didn't have cars, and so couldn't bring their family into town for medical attention or delivery of their babies.

This week I would like to update everyone on the tremendous effort and work that our board members, volunteers and staff are doing on behalf of the Social Engagement Grant. As you know, our Village was awarded a grant by the DC Office on Aging (DCOA) to identify seniors who are potentially less socially engaged than they might be and develop ways to help.

Have you ever felt like your world was spinning out of control? One morning I got out of bed, and my world actually was. Spinning.

I couldn't drive my car for the next two months.

During the first few of weeks of this prolonged case of vertigo, I worked around the inconvenience by relying on friends and relatives who drove me to doctors and fetched our groceries. Before long, I became embarrassed at my lack of independence, and grew reluctant to keep asking for help as life all too slowly retuned to normal.

What I needed was a Village.

The Foggy Bottom West End Village had a lot to celebrate this year. Memberships grew 40% during our first year and 94% of the memberships were renewed, including several who chose to increase their annual membership from one to three years and individual members who were joined by their spouses.

Not a week goes by without Villagers engaging in programs – wellness workshops, arts and cultural experiences, coffee klatches, happy hours, author talks or garden tours, to name a few. By the end of 2014, the Village will have hosted approximately 213 programs and ongoing affinity group meetings, representing nearly 1,000 total “attendance.”

It is with great sadness that we tell you that Rebecca Coder, a founding Village board member, died this week from complications related to cancer. She was 49.

The home going and life celebration service for her will be Thursday, May 10, at 10 a.m. at St. Stephen the Martyr Catholic Church, 25th and Pennsylvania Ave NW.

There will be a reception and story sharing event following the service at RIS, 23rd and L Street NW. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Rebecca’s amazing life with her family and friends.

Alan Andreasen is a long-time resident of Great Falls, and has recently joined the Village as a Nonresident Social Member. He is actively involved in the Village’s survey of neighborhood residents designed to help increase our membership. He is married to Jean Manning, who serves on the Village’s Board of Directors.

Nancy G. Porter moved to Foggy Bottom in late 1983, and except for three years living in St. Michael’s, MD, she has lived in the neighborhood ever since.
